Catching Faith (2015) Reviews

  • Weak Film

    bensfiction2015-09-25

I'm not a Christian, but I can understand that a good part of this country is. I think that Christians, however, are doing themselves a disservice with this recent rash of films they've made. Hear me out on this. The filmmakers seem to have one thing in common: none of them have studied film. The cinematography is flat, the editing is filled with jump cuts, and the dialogue seems contrived and unnatural. It seems to me that if the filmmakers would put a little more time into their work they could actually pull off something pretty awesome and a little further reaching. Unfortunately, the films seem to be shot on a shoe-string budget with only the interest of the movie studios making money off of a certain demographic. I'm OK if you're Christian, but you should still have discernibility in your tastes of film. These films are flimsy and don't hold.

  • Terrible writing, acting, cinematography, lighting and sound

    jdpeters-710362015-11-17

If you want to watch a movie that is even too bad for TV, you're in for a treat! "Catching Faith" is just plain awful. The plot follows no true path, and not surprisingly, the writing is just painful. The actors don't add much to the writing, through no fault of their own, however even with good writing it's clear these actors would be lucky to land regular gigs in commercials. Lighting and sound are atrocious. The first scene inside the house is exceedingly bright, and the strange cinematography puts them in poorly lit or overly exposed situations on a regular basis. The sound is terrible as well. Sometimes I could barely make out what an actor was saying. Given all of that, here are some specific parts of this film that support my review (in no particular order): The last thing I'll say is that Bill Engvall should stick to actual comedy, instead of a film that's supposed to be heartwarming but instead ends up being laughable.

  • Easily the worst movie I've ever seen

    megankweisshaar-865772015-10-03

To be honest, I'm shocked that half of the reviews for "Catching Faith" are positive and glowing. This is easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen; I'm not surprised this was a straight-to-video creation by a director that clearly has no idea what he's doing. The writing is hokey and too obviously filled with Christian sentiments and teachings, the acting is painful and awkward, and there is almost no storyline. I get that they're trying to portray a strong Christian message and spread that good old word of God, but please... Let's hold the drama, shall we? This movie was unrealistic in the way that everyone behaved. While I'm sure it's mostly due to bad acting, I have seen this time and time again in Christian movies. Everything is depicted as a perfect little world where all is well and right in the world, and the worst possible issue to deal with is teen drinking. Really? Your son is eighteen and had one drink at a party, and is an otherwise good kid, and your world is falling apart because of that? These characters clearly have nothing else exciting in their lives, otherwise in any other situation, this wouldn't be a big deal. Let's stop pretending that Christians always do the right thing. By turning in their son, they're punishing him and potentially ruining his future. Trust me, there are a lot worse acts committed by Christians around the world everyday. They are some of the biggest hypocrites I know. So let's all take a deep breath, give our heads a shake, and maybe move on to more important things like... Oh I don't know, how Americans are threatening world peace or there are 3 billion starving children worldwide or perhaps inevitable climate change? Do yourselves a favor and don't watch this pathetic creation. And if you're Christian, maybe go ahead... you guys seem to have bad taste in movies.

  • Decent Movie, Continuity Errors

    district5442016-10-04

Not a terrible movie. Catching Faith presented a positive message of owning up to your choices in life, even if they are hard. It also taught the lesson of being okay with the life you lead. The issue I had with the movie was in the film making process. There were a huge amount of continuity errors, especially during the football games. Beaus friend is QB the entire game, until 40 seconds left in the championship game and all of the sudden him and Beau just disappear from the field. I get that you shot a lot of B roll but make sure the same number is on the field. Also they show a close up of the centers hand a few times with a glove on and then when they zoom out, he has no glove. Simply attention to detail and maybe a few better actors would have gone miles.

  • Best Faith Movie EVER!

    angelamustion_ths2016-03-23

I loved the whole story line of this movie. The moms friend at the first of the movie really made me mad though but she got what she deserved at the end of the movie. I feel the parents did take a little too long to discipline their son for underage drinking but in the end they did the right thing by making him go confess to his coach what he had done. I love how throughout the movie the mom finds herself getting closer and closer back to God and her faith. I found myself thinking how much I have strayed away from my faith and really want to change that. This movie can really move you in your faith and really make you think about some of the people in your life.
