Euromania (2014) Reviews

  • Being anti-EU does not justify lying

    mpig-4-4002652014-08-20

I am just five minutes into this documentary and I am already so pi$$ed that I feel compelled to write my first ever review on IMDb. These are the things that I noticed so far: 1) The author makes fun at the fact that the EU issues rules about things like the size of strawberries, implying that this is just a silly idea pushed by some crazy EU bureaucrat. Truth is that the size of strawberries is regulated to enforce a "trade standard". All civilised countries have such rules as a mean to prevent commerce fraud. 2) The author says that 80% of his country's laws are made by the EU. This is simply a lie. The European parliament hardly ever issues any acts that can be defined as laws (they are called regulations) but it rather usually issues guidelines (called directives) for laws which then have to be written and approved by national parliaments. 3) The author says that national governments are not allowed to decide how to allocate money in their annual budget. Another big fat lie. All EU countries AGREED to put a cap on their budget deficit, apart from that they can spend their money any way they want. That's three lies in five minutes. At this rate, if any of you can make it trough the whole 55 minutes of this documentary, you might witness the author accomplish the quite significant feat of dishing out a total of 33 lies in a single video. Well, good for you, as for me, I've had enough of this nonsense already.

  • Making you aware

    martijn-nu2014-06-04

This documentary is a great eye opener and lifts a bit of the curtain on what the European union is doing. The idea of a European union is good but the abomination that it has become is not the way it works. The European union is turning into a socialist state. In the equation of government, business, citizens the government should be eliminated. Can we as people not decide what is good for us? Do we need laws for everything? Do we need to be treated like we are ignorant and need a government to make decisions for us? As Ewald Engelen is saying this is an insult to the EU citizen. Let free markets decide what is in the best interest of the people. I also suggest you watch the documentary that Milton Friedman made in 1980 named Free to Choose. Although it is 34 years old, with the current developments in the world it is still very actual. As Benjamin Franklin stated: He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

  • Simply very good documentary

    lupaolabcn2014-07-24

I am not a person who watches a lot of documentaries about politics and so. But my brother sent me this one. I'm from Spain and most people here have good view of European Union. So did I. But this film really makes me think. Why didn't i know that EU has so many problems? That it is not so democratic. As the film shows clearly the secrecy is the big problem. Documents are not given to parliament, lobbyists -15000!- have much influence. And it all happens because most of us see Europe as the big peace project, the Nobel price winners. I feel a bit angry and sad. Not sure if I will vote again in the next elections. This should be in Spanish television.

  • Badly researched, biased, bigoted

    rachel_robinson1122014-10-30

One of the worst documentaries I have seen recently. I found it to be badly researched, false and with bias. It is clear he knows very little of how the EU works in real life and where and how problems are really generated (maybe undertaking some studies of history, politics or law would aid him with this, rather than his use of 'google-searching'). What a contradiction to inequality to joke about how 'us men like our porn'! I would also not be surprised if Peter Vlemmix is also a supporter of nationalistic politics as well. I was angered to hear much of the content of this film and am sorry to say that I could not watch it all!

  • An excellent movie. Reports of it telling lies are false

    notoeufascism2014-09-08

First of all, to address the review from mpig above that says this movie is telling lies: **"1) The author makes fun at the fact that the EU issues rules about things like the size of strawberries, implying that this is just a silly idea pushed by some crazy EU bureaucrat. Truth is that the size of strawberries is regulated to enforce a "trade standard". All civilised countries have such rules as a mean to prevent commerce fraud."** The EU has a long tradition of ordering "member" nations to make their fruit and veg conform to size and shape standards that have nothing to do with ordinary trade norms. Also, the EU has classified cinnamon as a poison, English wine as a fruit-based beverage and wants to be able to remotely control all vehicles on EU roads. **") The author says that 80% of his country's laws are made by the EU. This is simply a lie. The European parliament hardly ever issues any acts that can be defined as laws (they are called regulations) but it rather usually issues guidelines (called directives) for laws which then have to be written and approved by national parliaments."** The vice president of the EU Commission, Vivian Redding, has stated that 75-80% of member nations' las are made by the EU. )Easy enough to find with an Internet search.) Directive are NOT guidelines. They are instructions for specific laws to be enacted in member states by a certain time and in a manner of the member states' own choosing. i.e. They ARE laws, and the EU Commission regularly fines and sues member nations for breaking them, **"3) The author says that national governments are not allowed to decide how to allocate money in their annual budget. Another big fat lie. All EU countries AGREED to put a cap on their budget deficit, apart from that they can spend their money any way they want."** The EU Commission now has final approval of Erozone member nations' budgets and can and does fine member nations (except Germany) for exceeding budget deficits. The EU treaties also state that no member state shall bail out another member state ... Obviously, the EU has ordered multiple bail outs of multiple member states, breaking and making laws as they go. **"That's three lies in five minutes. At this rate, if any of you can make it trough the whole 55 minutes of this documentary, you might witness the author accomplish the quite significant feat of dishing out a total of 33 lies in a single video. Well, good for you, as for me, I've had enough of this nonsense already. "** If the first three claimed "lies" were all not lies, most likely the other 30 claimed lies were not lies. The major unifying characteristic that binds the EU and its supporters is deception. As for the documentary, it's excellent! If people find what it says hard to swallow -- e.g. that the EU Parliament is anti-democratic, in that it is not a parliament, and can not make of abolish any laws -- then the problem isn't with the documentary, it's with the EU. I love the gentle way the presenter deftly exposes the EU for what it is: a technocracy whose official position on national sovereignty is that it is the greatest cause of evil in history. This movie is available free on YouTube. Anyone who cares a darn about preserving democracy and thwarting the steady creep of fascism back across Europe should watch this movie and advise all their friends to watch it, too.
