Lahoo Ke Do Rang (1997) Reviews

  • Below Average Action Comedy

    superindrajit2013-07-20

Akshay Kumar was doing great in the 90s, despite some flops in between, his Khiladi films and some other action films were doing good. However, his streak bit the dust and he was failing as an actor from 1997 till 1999 when he revived his career with Jaanwar. 1996 ended on a good note with Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi(1996) doing superb business, Sapoot(1996) being a moderate success, and Tu Chor Main Sipahi(1996) being an average runner. No one expected 1997 to start on such a bad note(for Akshay), it was extremely surprising. Lahoo Ke Do Rang(1997) was Akshay's first release in 1997 and it didn't do so well. It was better than half of the random Mithun films releasing in 1997 but it was nothing great. The film had a poor opening and couldn't recover it's cost let alone doubling it's profit. As a result, it flopped at the box office starting 1997 on a bad note. The film isn't anything novel in terms of the story, the narrative style isn't effective and there is a lot of overacting which makes the film irritating. One would expect the film to at least pick up post the interval but instead of cheesy and poor comedy, we get a boring revenge story that goes on and on till the climax. The film contains twists and turns but it doesn't work because the narration and story fails to explain some parts. The ending is clichéd with comedy mixed with action in a typical climax. Though it is a delight watching Naseerudin Shah fake his death and kill the villains stealthy but the on going scenes fail to utilize this one good point of the story and the film goes below mediocre when it reaches the end. Yes, the comedy is funny in a few parts but the overacting and the crude humor gets on your nerves especially when it gets repeated. Direction by Mehul Kumar is crap, this was his first dud after which he though he would get a comeback with Mrityudaata(1997). Sadly, he failed there too. He doesn't put much effort in most of the film and the end product looks like a badly handled action comedy. He always relied on powerful actors like Nana Patekar to uplift his most ordinary action films. However, this time, Nana is not there to save the day. Akshay Kumar is at his worst here, he overacts terribly in the first half and he acts ably in the serious scenes. He was not a good comedian till Hera Pheri(2000), he was uncomfortable with comedy in the 90s. However, his action scenes despite being typical are watchable. Naseerudin Shah badly overacts in sad scenes but his dialog delivery and revenge scenes are well handled in parts. Karishma Kapoor doesn't have much of a role, her shrieking is annoying and the comedy scenes of hers wasn't required. Farida Jalal does a decent job but when she goes to prison, her anger towards Akshay isn't well handled. The villains are typecast and fill the bill. The guy who calls himself Zaalim Kuta is annoying and a complete miscast for a side villains role. The rest provide average support the films needed. Action is good in parts and badly handled in parts, however this action is better than what we get nowadays. Music is decent, Haseeno Ko Aaate is a good song, Mujhe Paisa Mila is also a good song, the rest are OK. On the whole, Lahoo Ke Do Rang is a poorly handled below average action comedy that didn't work in 1997 when it released. Neither could Naseer's dialogs nor Akshay's action save it from flopping at the box office.
