Out of Line (2001) Reviews

  • I loved this film!

I loved this film! A conditional agent (Jeniffer Beals) become involved with ex-convict (Holt McCallany) that is trying to change his life to better in a not very common way. In fact, Holt McCallany is fantastic in this film! In an only film he got to be comic, dramatic, cruel, good, romantic, hero and villain. A wonderful performance! Excellent performances also to: Michael Moriarty, Christopher Judge and William B. Davis.

  • Conflict, Relationships, Crime, Action, What More Do You Want!

Catching this film was like Discovering the movie "Sideways". It comes out of no where with actors you've never seen before but makes a nice big impression. It's a great little film with good acting, compelling scenes, and complicated relationships that resolve nicely. What more do you want? It has a believable plot about a parole officer and her criminally experienced and sexually charged client who chips away at her ability to maintain that all important border between her and her client, which ultimately collapses and if discovered threatens her emotionally, occupationally and physically. Not only is her career and safety at stake but her emotional well being is being challenged as well. The relationship that develops between her and the parolee is palatable. The danger that looms though between her and her police colleagues is yet another sub plot that is just as volatile. I generally watch three movies at a time and this is the one I kept coming back to. For a low budget production, I thought it was as optimized as it could be.

  • Amazing crime thriller, deserves a much better rating

    TheBlueHairedLawyer2014-12-15

William B. Davis is my favorite actor and I'm a big fan of his acting in movies and in television (most notably his role as The Cigarette Smoking Man on The X-Files. I'm also a crime drama addict so I was really happy to have found Out of Line on YouTube. The plot tells the story of Jenny (Jennifer Beals), a parole officer who works to rehabilitate and keep an eye on the ex-cons. She works with her friend/parolee Larry (Michael Moriarty) and best friend/colleague Russell (William B. Davis). She's highly respected in her workplace and leads a totally normal life. One day Jenny is assigned to a charismatic parolee named Henri Brulé (Holt McCallany). His crime was murder, and he starts showing up like a stalker in all the places she goes as well as acting very disturbing and sort of perverted towards average people on the street, in places like the local library and jewelry store. When he and Jenny fall in love and have an illegal relationship, Larry finds this out and tells Russell, who at first doesn't believe it but later talks to Jenny about it. Jenny denies it, but when she finds herself at gunpoint no thanks to Brulé, she realizes that she let her better judgment slip. This movie currently has a 5/10 overall rating, it deserves much better! It was obviously well planned, the soundtrack really fits all the scenes, the ending was amazing and the actors were all great in their roles. The Canadian scenery was cool to see as well, most of the crime dramas I've seen take place in the States although I'm Canadian, probably something to do with general filming locations or something.

  • Okay film to waste time with on a slow afternoon.

This is a movie with a plot that we have all seen before (good woman redeems bad man who really is a good guy at heart) many times. The main characters are all stock characters and very predictable. This is a very low budget movie that doesn't even try to pretend to be more exciting then it is by trying to flash things up with car chase scenes,a loud musical sound track (in fact, the music is like a flashback to a 1970s cop show), trashy women and/or men, or beautiful locations. That said, there are some very able well known actors in the film who deliver good performances despite a mediocre script. There is no suspense that I can recall or any dialog that was important to the plot. The supporting actors all deliver good performances also. The two leads have decent on screen chemistry and the touching relationship that develops between them is believable. Yes, predictable, but sweet just the same. If you like Jennifer Beals or Holt McCallany, or movies about ex-cons on parole you might find this mildly entertaining.

  • CHRIS JUDGE

    Arnie_ fan2002-11-08

in my opinion christopher judge who plays alfonso in this movie and teal'c on stargate sg1 is one of the most underated actors of all time. This guy should be a main player on major hollywood blockbusters if his talent is anything to go by! once stargate sg1 finishes i expect chris to go onto bigger and better things what a fantastic actor! the movie in itself is ok but chris should take a step up where he belongs i think chris if he realised his ambition could be the next arnold schwarzenegger or denzel washington.
