Thus begins a journey all the way to England; the home of cricket. It is a journey which gives the Warriors the courage to face their elders in the hope of ending FGM.

Warriors (2015) Reviews

  • A life affirming documentary... with some cricket

On paper, it was hard to work out what this film was really going to be about. On the surface, it appeared to be about Maasai playing cricket, but then there were references to FGM and other issues in the promotional material. For about 5 minutes in the middle of the film I was starting to wonder myself, as the film did slightly lose it's way in the narrative, but then as the warrior cricketers journey continued it started to make sense... The film is ultimately about that stage in the development of a society where the younger, more worldly educated generation start to question the status quo of their elders. FGM, HIV/AIDS and female oppression are the norm for many of the communities within the Maasai region. Cricket becomes a vehicle for the new generation of Maasai warriors to express themselves, travel outside of their closed community and ultimately challenge these values in order to progress the development of their society. Beautifully shot, with intelligent use of animation to link themes together plus a great soundtrack. Having watched the film as a cinema release, with Q&A from the film maker afterward, it really helped to understand how genuine the film and the issues are. Hopefully this will get a wider release and a TV slot, so more people can get to see it.
